How To Make The Most Out Of Skip Hire This Summer

Hiring a skip this summer? Here’s how to make the most of your hire period.

The longer, warmer days are quickly approaching, and your annual summer shenanigans are right around the corner.

For many, the sunshine brings inspiration and motivation – whether it be to give their gardens a well overdue tidy-up or to finally get round to the bathroom refit they’ve been putting off.

No matter the project you’ll be working on, hiring a skip with GSH is sure to help you out this summer, but how can you make the most of it?

Here are some of our top tips!

Make sure you order the right skip size

Hiring the right size container is the most important thing to consider when it comes to booking your skip.

You must choose a size that’s suitable for your needs, which means you’ll need to have a rough idea of how much waste your project will generate.

At Grundy’s Skip Hire, we have a large stock of skips available for you to choose from, including:

      • 4-cubic yard midi skips

These skips are ideal for smaller, DIY home projects like living room and bedroom makeovers, or even just a simple cupboard clear out. They can hold up to 45 bin bags full of rubbish.

      • 8-cubic yard maxi skips

If you’re tackling a slightly larger job, like a full bathroom or kitchen refit, this size will be perfect, and they can fit approximately 80 bin bags of waste.

      • 12 and 16-cubic yard maxi skips

For projects that you expect to generate more bulky materials, a 12 or 16-yard maxi skip is your best bet, and they can hold up to 120 bin bags full of rubbish.

      Load your waste effectively

When hiring a skip, many people pay no mind to the way they load their container and tend to just throw things in as they go.

While this might work for some, others may find they’re left with little or no room in their skip quite quickly – but there are ways you can keep this from happening.

Begin with any cardboard or paper, making sure to flatten it before tossing it in.

Don’t just stack them on top of one another, though – create a layer and only begin stacking other items on top once the first layer is complete.

If you have any old bathroom tiles or bricks, put these in next, followed by bulkier items like furniture and appliances, making sure to break these down into smaller pieces.

Finally, you can begin disposing of any debris, like soil or sand, and any other loose items on top.

Consider where you’ll be leaving your skip

If it’s your first time hiring a skip, you might be wondering why this matters – driveway, garden, pavement – it’s all the same, right?

We’re here to tell you it isn’t, and you must have a good idea of where you’re going to leave your container so that you can organise a skip hire permit if necessary.

If you don’t have space in your driveway or garden, you’ll need to leave our skip on the path or road outside your house, and you’ll need to obtain a skip hire permit.

The point of a permit is to ensure the container is placed safely on public highways, and all licences will be approved or rejected by your local council.

Here at GSH, we can organise permits and acquire all the necessary documents for you for a small additional cost.

Know what can and can’t go into your skip

So long as it’s not hazardous, you’ll be able to dispose of any kind of waste you generate in your skip.

At GSH, our team will accept the following:

      • Construction waste, including bricks, rubble and wood
      • Broken or unwanted furniture
      • Recyclable plastics
      • Cardboard packages
      • Garden waste, including tree branches, soil and shrubs
      • Metal items

If you have any questions about the waste you can dispose of in our skips, be sure to get in touch with us – we’re more than happy to help!
