Which Skip Size Is Best For Me?

Hiring a skip to help you get rid of unwanted waste and not sure which size to get? In this post, our experts explain the differences between our popular 4- and 8-yard skips and why they’re ideal for any project!

So, you’ve decided to hire a skip to help you get rid of your unwanted waste.

There’s much to think about – from hire periods and permits to which size skip you need.

With so many different skip sizes available, it can be difficult to know which will best meet your requirements – especially if you’re new to skip hire.

Two of our most popular containers here at GSH are 4-yard skips and 8-yard skips (among others), but what exactly are the differences, and which one is right for you?

In this post, our experts explain the difference between 4-yard and 8-yard skips, and how to go about selecting the perfect size!

      4-yard skips

Our 4-yard skips are our smallest, so if you’re taking on a small DIY project, this size will be more than ideal.

Holding up to 45 bin bags full of waste, one of our 4-yard skips will be perfect if you’re taking on a simple cupboard clear out, bedroom makeover, or garage clean-up, comfortably accommodating all of your associated rubbish.

Being the smallest of our collection of containers, 4-tonne containers are incredibly affordable – so if you’re looking for a cost-effective, budget-friendly waste management solution, you can’t go wrong with one of our 4-yard skips.

      8-yard skips

Our 8-yard skips are our most popular, and our customers use them for an array of different projects.

They’re especially useful if you aren’t really sure which size skip to hire, as they provide plenty room for all of your waste – accommodating approximately 80 (!) bin bags full of rubbish.

Even if you don’t expect your project to generate so much waste, but are unsure whether a 4-yard skip will be sufficient enough, an 8-yard skip is ideal. Remember, it’s always better to have too much room than not enough!

So, no matter whether you’re starting your dream bathroom renovation, kitchen makeover, or remodelling your living room, an 8-yard skip will be ideal.

Of course, being a little larger, 8-yard skips are more expensive to hire, but they’re more than worth it.

What other skip sizes can I choose from?

If you’re after something a bit bigger still, we offer a few more skip sizes to choose from, including:

      • 12 cubic yard maxi skip – if you’re expecting your project to generate lots of bulky items, these larger containers will be perfect, as they’re big enough to hold up to 120 bin bags full of waste.
      • 16 cubic yard maxi skip – this is our largest skip size, holding up to twice as much as our 8-yard skips; perfect for large-scale clear-ups and full home renovations.
