How skip hire helps reduce landfill waste

Responsible skip-hire services should effectively reduce landfill waste.

This can massively benefit the environment, lowering your carbon footprint and protecting local wildlife.

Read on as we break down how the disposal process works and how this can reduce negative impacts on the environment.

      The disposal process

      Sorting

Once you’re done with your skip, we go through your waste at our facility and separate materials, referring to this as the ‘sorting process’.

This step is essential to ensure that you’re correctly disposing of your waste materials and reduces the risks of contamination when recycling. Without this step, it could lead to a waste of resources and even hazards to the environment. Sorting also allows the removal of any products that are too bulky or aren’t recyclable.

      Treatment and processing

Treatment refers to analysing waste to decide the most appropriate way to dispose of it, this can include shredding, melting or compacting for example. This prepares the waste for the final stage.

Once we’ve deciphered the best way to treat the waste, we can process it accordingly. This is a beneficial stage of the process as it eases the next step, reducing waste volume massively. Without correct treatment and processing, the waste can have a negative impact on the environment.

      Waste disposal

      The final step is disposal.

At GSH, we prioritise ethical waste disposal and aim to recycle at least 95% of the waste collected in our skips at our specialist facility.

Any items we’re unable to dispose of ourselves will be transported to specialist recycling and disposal centres, in accordance with local regulations, so they can be reused and continue their lifecycle.

How does a skip-hire service benefit the environment?

Correct recycling reduces waste in landfills, which have a detrimental impact on the environment. A huge build-up of waste can pollute the earth and water, posing massive health risks to local humans and animals.

Landfills also contribute around 31% of UK methane emissions due to decomposition. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, which is making a significant contribution to air pollution and climate change.

Choosing a responsible skip provider can ensure that your waste will be managed sustainably and recycled where possible. Additionally, you can protect local wildlife and reduce your carbon footprint with ease.
