So, you’re finally getting round to your annual cupboard clear-out – but this year, you’ve decided to hire a skip to help you get rid of everything you no longer need.
If it’s your first time hiring a skip, you’re likely wondering how everything works. Admittedly, it can be a little confusing at first.
To help you prepare, the experts at GSH Waste walk you through the ins and outs of the skip hire process in this post.
Make sure you choose the right skip size
You might be confused as to why this matters, because you just toss everything in – right?
Absolutely not!
If you haven’t hired a skip before, we understand how easy it can be to underestimate the importance of the size of your container.
Trust us when we say it’s one of the most important considerations, and you need to get it right the first time to avoid paying more than is necessary.
But how do you know which size you need?
Here at GSH Waste, we offer a range of domestic skip sizes, including:
- 4-cubic yard midi skips – great for smaller DIY projects like bathroom or kitchen renovations, they can hold up to 45 bin bags full of rubbish.
- 8-cubic yard maxi skips – the go-to choice for small to medium-sized jobs, one of these skips can hold approximately 80 bin bags full of waste.
- 12-cubic yard maxi skips – for projects expected to generate lots of bulky items, these larger containers are perfect, and they can hold more than 120 bin bags.
- 16-cubic yard maxi skips – ideal for light and bulky construction materials, these containers are popular for larger-scale clear-ups, renovations and refits, and can fit almost twice as much waste as the 8-yard skip!
Figure out how long you’ll need it for
You might only need a skip over the weekend, or you may need to keep it for a little longer.
Whilst we don’t need to know an exact timeframe right away, we always appreciate a rough estimate when booking your delivery appointment.
Typically, you can hire one of our domestic containers for up to two weeks, but if you need to extend this it’s not an issue – all we ask is that you give us plenty of notice.

Look into skip hire permits
Permits are sometimes required for skip hire in Merseyside because of the safety hazards and inconvenience they can cause to the general public.
Not all skips need a permit, and if you’re planning on leaving yours in your garden or driveway then you don’t need to worry about this.
However, if you don’t have the luxury of a large garden or driveway, you’ll need to leave your container on the path or road outside your property – after getting permission from your local council.
To make things easier, we can arrange this for you, and the price will be included in the overall cost of your skip hire.
