Skip sizes will vary from company to company, but you’ll always find a wide range of sizes – from very small to very large.

- 4-cubic yard mini skips – These skips are a great option for those tackling a DIY project, like a bathroom or kitchen refit and garden clear-ups and they can accommodate up to 45 bin bags full of rubbish.
- 8-cubic yard midi skips – The go-to choice for small to medium-sized jobs, these skips can fit approximately 80 bin bags full of waste.
- 12-cubic yard maxi skips – If you expect your project to generate bulky items and construction materials, these large containers are ideal as they can fit more than 120 bin bags of rubbish comfortably.
- 16-cubic yard maxi skips – These skips are popular for those undertaking large-scale clear-ups, as they can hold more than twice as much waste as the 8-yard skips!
Cubic yards (often abbreviated to yards) refer to the internal volume of the skip, and one cubic yard measures 3 feet high x 3 feet wide x 3 feet deep ( or 91cm x 91cm x 9cm) and, roughly, takes up the same amount of space as ten bin bags.
Of course, larger sizes offer better value for money if you have enough waste to fill it, but our 4 and 8-yard skips are popular as they can accommodate a range of different projects and types of waste.
Why is it so important to choose the right size?
The importance of choosing the right-sized skip should never be underestimated.
If you choose one that’s too big, you’ll end up using more of your budget than you need to and it will take up unnecessary space on your property.
Whilst it would be better to have more space than not enough, choosing a skip that’s too small will leave you with unwanted rubbish all over the place, as well as the need to hire a second skip to accommodate the overflow.
An overfilled skip also comes with penalty fees, and, not to mention, poses a huge risk to passers-by. So to avoid these issues, consider your needs carefully to select the right size the first time around.
So, how do I choose the right skip size?
When choosing the perfect-sized skip, there are several things you need to consider, including:
Project scale
The scope of your project will, of course, determine how much waste you’ll generate and what size skip you need.
For example, if you’re working on a full-scale home renovation, you’ll be better off with one of our larger skip sizes – like a 12 or 16-yard skip – to ensure you have enough room for all your rubbish.
For single-room renovations or cupboard clearouts that don’t generate too much waste or bulky construction materials, a smaller skip size – like the 4 or 8-yard skip – is more than ideal.
Waste type
The volume of waste you’re expecting to dispose of is a vital consideration, but equally important is the type of waste you’ll be throwing away.
Bulky construction materials, for instance, will require more space, whereas lighter debris might not fill a larger skip, and will therefore be suited to something smaller.
Access and placement
Waste type and volume aside, ensuring that you have enough space on your property, or on the road outside, to accommodate the skip size you need is crucial.
You should also make sure your skip is accessible, and that it can be dropped off and picked up easily by your skip hire company.
Budget
Last, but certainly not least, is your budget.
It goes without saying that bigger sizes cost more, so make sure to balance your budget with the optimal skip size for your project requirements.
