What Can You Put in a 4 Yard Skip? (Complete Guide)

Multi-purpose Skips - GSH Skip Hire

Hiring a 4-yard skip is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to quickly get rid of waste from small home improvements, garden clearances, and general decluttering projects.

But before you book this skip size, it’s important to understand exactly what you can put in a midi 4-yard skip. This will ensure your waste is disposed of properly, avoiding delays or fines for putting the wrong materials in your skip.

At GSH Waste Recycling, we want our customers to have a smooth waste disposal experience every time. So, we’re here to help you understand how to dispose of waste in a 4-yard skip safely.

In this complete guide to 4-yard skip hire, we’ll cover how big a 4-yard skip really is, what can and can’t go in 4-yard skips, and whether you’ll need a permit to hire one for your project.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about what you can put in 4 yard skips!

How big is a 4 yard skip?

It’s important to choose the best skip size for your needs, as you don’t want to order a skip that’s too small and have to hire another one, or order a bigger skip that you don’t have enough waste to fill.

That’s why the 4-yard skip is often called a midi skip, as it’s the perfect middle size for most clearance projects.

With a footprint a little smaller than the average parking space in the UK, the size of a 4 cubic yard skip is typically just right to fit onto a driveway or in a front garden without completely blocking access.

4 yard skip size in metres and feet:

      • Volume: 4 cubic yards (approx. 3 cubic metres)
      • Length: ~1.8 metres (6 feet)
      • Width: ~1.3 metres (4.3 feet)
      • Height: ~1 metre (3.2 feet)

What can 4 yard skip hire be used for?

These 4-tonne containers can hold up to 30-45 standard black bin bags of waste, which is the ideal capacity for a range of small-to-medium projects, such as:

      • Kitchen or bathroom refits
      • Garden landscaping
      • Garage or loft clearances
      • Bedroom makeovers
      • General decluttering

Whether you’re doing a bit of DIY in your own home, you’re a builder working on a small job, or you’re overseeing a small office renovation, the 4-yard skip is a versatile and budget-friendly solution.

However, if you’re removing a full kitchen or bathroom suite, disposing of large volumes of heavy soil, or completing a major refurbishment, you may need a larger skip (like our 8-yard builder’s skip).

What can you put in a 4 yard skip?

If you’re not sure what you can put in a skip, at GSH Waste Recycling, our 4-yard skips can be used to dispose of most non-hazardous household, garden, and building waste.

Items that you’re allowed to put in a 4-yard skip include:

      General Household Waste

      • Old furniture (chairs, small sofas, cupboards)
      • Clothes and textiles
      • Toys (non-electronic)
      • General household junk
      • Paper and cardboard
      • Boxes and packaging

      Garden Waste

      • Soil
      • Grass clippings
      • Leaves
      • Shrubs
      • Small branches
      • Turf (non-plastic)

      Construction & DIY Waste

      • Bricks
      • Rubble
      • Concrete
      • Wood
      • Metals
      • UPVC
      • Plastics
      • Hardcore
      • Soil and clay
      • Tiles and ceramics

For many small projects, a 4-yard skip can hold up to 4 tonnes of waste, though weight limits apply – so you should be especially careful when loading dense materials like soil or bricks.

These materials are accepted because we can sort, process, and recycle or dispose of them safely and correctly, in compliance with local council, national government, and EU regulations.

What can’t you put in a 4 yard skip?

It’s also essential to know what you can’t put in a skip. While most everyday waste is allowed, certain items are strictly prohibited due to environmental and safety regulations.

Items you should never put in a 4-yard skip include:

      Hazardous Materials

      • Asbestos
      • Chemicals
      • Solvents
      • Liquids
      • Toxic materials
      • Explosives

      These require specialist disposal.

      Electrical Items (WEEE Waste)

      • TVs and monitors
      • Fridges and freezers
      • Microwaves
      • Tumble dryers
      • Laptops and computers
      • Mobile phones
      • Electrical appliances
      • Vapes and e-cigs

These must be taken to authorised recycling facilities.

      Other Prohibited Items

      • Batteries (including lithium-ion)
      • Tyres and rubber matting
      • Gas cylinders
      • Fire extinguishers
      • Medical or clinical waste
      • Paint tins with liquid inside
      • Fluorescent tubes
      • Large tree stumps
      • Mattresses
      • Perishable waste (food)
      • Plasterboard (unless using a dedicated plasterboard skip)

These items require specialist handling, and in some cases, they must go into separate waste streams.

It’s important to follow these rules to keep yourself, our skip and waste handling staff, and the local environment safe. If you’re unsure whether your waste needs specialist disposal or not, feel free to contact us for advice.

Do you need a permit for 4 yard skip hire?

Whether you need a skip permit or not depends on where you plan to put the skip.

You do not need a permit if the skip will be placed on:

      • Your driveway
      • Your garden
      • Private land you own

However, you will need a permit if the skip is placed on:

      • A public road
      • A pavement
      • A grass verge
      • Any public highway

Public land is controlled by your local council, so permission is legally required before you can put a skip there.

As a 4-yard skip hire company, we can arrange a skip permit on your behalf for an additional fee. Permit costs and duration vary depending on the local authority, so be sure to check permit prices.

How long can you keep a 4 yard skip?

The typical hire period for a 4-yard skip is between 7 and 14 days. The maximum hire term for a 4-yard skip from GSH Waste Recycling is 2 weeks, but if you need a skip for longer, we can help.

As long as you give us enough notice, we will be happy to offer a more flexible arrangement and allow you to extend your 4-yard skip hire term for up to 2 weeks at a time.

If you think your project is going to run over, please notify us before the end of your hire period, so we can work out an appropriate extension and arrange your new fees and collection date.

How much does hiring a 4 yard skip cost?

The price for a 4-yard skip rental depends on your location, how long you need to keep the skip for, the type of waste you want to dispose of, and whether you need a skip hire permit or not.

This means that to get an accurate 4-yard skip hire price, you’ll need to provide this information to request a quote.

Being very clear about what you will be putting in the skip and how long your project is going to take will help us give you the most accurate quote and avoid extra charges down the line.

When you come to GSH Waste Recycling for 4 cubic yard skip hire, you’re choosing affordability and sustainability.

Much more cost-effective than hiring rubbish removers or making multiple trips to a waste recycling centre, with a guarantee that your waste will be disposed of legally and up to 90% will be recycled, skip hire is a great choice.

How big is an 8-yard skip?

How big is an 8 yard skip?

Discover everything you need to know about an 8-yard skip and how the experts at GSH can efficiently manage your waste disposal.

An 8 cubic yard skip is usually equivalent to around 12 feet long and 5 to 6 feet wide. In height, you can expect your skip to measure up to around 4 to 4.5 feet tall.

For scale, an 8-yard skip is capable of holding approximately 60 to 80 bin bags of waste, or 8 standard-size washing machines.

When should I use an 8-yard skip?

These skips are hugely versatile, making them suitable for a comprehensive range of projects, such as decluttering, construction, or major renovation work. Whether you’re undergoing a domestic or commercial refurbishment, an 8-yard skip is suitable for large-scale needs due to its considerable size and weight capabilities (often carrying up to 8 tonnes of waste).

With your 8-yard skip, you can dispose of general, building, and garden waste. To find out more about what you can and can’t store in your skip hire, check out our blog.

      Choosing the right skip size

If it’s your first time hiring a skip, it can seem complicated as to where to start. Nevertheless, some easy tips for deciding on the best skip size for your requirements include:

      • Considering space: If you’re limited as to where you can put your skip, this might be something worth considering.
      • Project type: A small household clear-out will, of course, generate less waste than a larger project. An assessment of this can ensure a streamlined process when you hire your skip.

Waste type and amount: Similarly to considering your project type, evaluating your waste requirements accordingly can help ensure that you’re choosing the most appropriate way to dispose of them.

If 8 yards doesn’t sound like the right skip for you, our comprehensive services also include a 4, 12, and 16-yard skip hire. So, whatever your needs, we’ll have a solution for you.

How skip hire helps reduce landfill waste

      Skip Hire reducing Landfill Waste

Responsible skip-hire services should effectively reduce landfill waste.

This can massively benefit the environment, lowering your carbon footprint and protecting local wildlife.

Read on as we break down how the disposal process works and how this can reduce negative impacts on the environment.

      The disposal process

      Sorting

Once you’re done with your skip, we go through your waste at our facility and separate materials, referring to this as the ‘sorting process’.

This step is essential to ensure that you’re correctly disposing of your waste materials and reduces the risks of contamination when recycling. Without this step, it could lead to a waste of resources and even hazards to the environment. Sorting also allows the removal of any products that are too bulky or aren’t recyclable.

      Treatment and processing

Treatment refers to analysing waste to decide the most appropriate way to dispose of it, this can include shredding, melting or compacting for example. This prepares the waste for the final stage.

Once we’ve deciphered the best way to treat the waste, we can process it accordingly. This is a beneficial stage of the process as it eases the next step, reducing waste volume massively. Without correct treatment and processing, the waste can have a negative impact on the environment.

      Waste disposal

      The final step is disposal.

At GSH, we prioritise ethical waste disposal and aim to recycle at least 95% of the waste collected in our skips at our specialist facility.

Any items we’re unable to dispose of ourselves will be transported to specialist recycling and disposal centres, in accordance with local regulations, so they can be reused and continue their lifecycle.

Diagram of Skip Hire reducing Landfill Waste

How does a skip-hire service benefit the environment?

Correct recycling reduces waste in landfills, which have a detrimental impact on the environment. A huge build-up of waste can pollute the earth and water, posing massive health risks to local humans and animals.

Landfills also contribute around 31% of UK methane emissions due to decomposition. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, which is making a significant contribution to air pollution and climate change.

Choosing a responsible skip provider can ensure that your waste will be managed sustainably and recycled where possible. Additionally, you can protect local wildlife and reduce your carbon footprint with ease.

      Why choose GSH?

Skip Hire Guide: What can you put in a skip?

Our Fleet Elsmere Port - GSH Skip Hire

Knowing what can and can’t go in a skip is important. By putting suitable materials in, you can minimise your chances of harming the environment and breaking EU or local council regulations.

Learn more about what you can and can’t dispose of to ensure the smoothest experience when hiring a skip with GSH.

What can you put in a skip?

As a skip-hire company, we offer seamless waste management solutions, generally accepting most household waste. We accept:

      • food waste
      • metal
      • glass
      • UPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride)
      • HD/PP (high-density polypropylene)
      • wood
      • plastics
      • cardboard

We also accept your construction waste, like bricks, rubble and metals.

You can pop your garden waste into a skip too. Any soil, grass clippings, tree branches or shrubs fall under biodegradable waste.

Why can you put these materials in a skip?

Once we receive your waste, we begin our sorting process. This is an important step in ensuring that we dispose of materials correctly.

We accept most recyclable materials and comply with all current EU, local council, and government guidelines. Legally, skip hire companies are required to recycle at least 90% of the waste we receive in our skips.

But we go above and beyond and are proud that we aim to recycle at least 95% of all waste collected. Correct waste disposal means that we can do our bit in reducing any unnecessary harm to the environment, making us an eco-friendly choice.

      Domestic Skip Hire

What can you not put in a skip?

While most general household waste can be put in a skip, not everything is suitable for this method of disposal. Our skip hire company doesn’t accept hazardous waste such as:

      • asbestos
      • batteries
      • medical waste, like needles or biological waste
      • mattresses
      • tyres
      • electrical equipment, such as TVs or computer monitors
      • fridges and freezers
      • gas cylinders
      • paint tins
      • plasterboard or gypsum waste
      • florescent tubes
      • liquids and solvents

However, you may be able to take some of these items to your local recycling centre.

      Why?

These materials shouldn’t be placed in a skip for a few reasons.

Things like batteries, medical waste, and asbestos can be extremely hazardous and could contaminate the environment, people, or other items in the skip and cause harm.

Items such as mattresses might be too big. Components of the mattress, such as the foam and springs can be taken apart and recycled separately. Mattresses therefore need to be disposed of by specialists, which GSH can assist with.

Tyres cannot be put in a skip under the Environmental Protection Act, making it illegal for them to go into landfills. This is because they can be hazardous, and can release toxic chemicals if burned, requiring specialist disposal.

It is paramount that you avoid throwing any hazardous waste into a skip to reduce any harmful emissions from your waste.

The ultimate guide to choosing the right skip size for your project

Skip Hire This year- GSH Skips

Whether you’re renovating your new house, having a much-needed cupboard clearout or tidying up your garden, hiring a skip is the ideal place to keep all of your rubbish and unwanted items.

However, skip hire isn’t as simple as just throwing your waste in the container and forgetting about it, there’s much more that goes into it to ensure you get your time and money’s worth.

Like, for instance, choosing the right skip size. But how do you do this?

Our experts at GSH have been providing quality skip hire in Liverpool (and surrounding areas in Merseyside) for decades, so we know a thing or two about choosing the perfect skip for your project.

Follow along as we share our top tips and reveal all you need to know about choosing your skip size below!

      What skip sizes are available?

Skip sizes will vary from company to company, but you’ll always find a wide range of sizes – from very small to very large.

At GSH, we have four different types of domestic skips available for hire, and these include:

      • 4-cubic yard mini skips – These skips are a great option for those tackling a DIY project, like a bathroom or kitchen refit and garden clear-ups and they can accommodate up to 45 bin bags full of rubbish.
      • 8-cubic yard midi skips – The go-to choice for small to medium-sized jobs, these skips can fit approximately 80 bin bags full of waste.
      • 12-cubic yard maxi skips – If you expect your project to generate bulky items and construction materials, these large containers are ideal as they can fit more than 120 bin bags of rubbish comfortably.
      • 16-cubic yard maxi skips – These skips are popular for those undertaking large-scale clear-ups, as they can hold more than twice as much waste as the 8-yard skips!

Cubic yards (often abbreviated to yards) refer to the internal volume of the skip, and one cubic yard measures 3 feet high x 3 feet wide x 3 feet deep ( or 91cm x 91cm x 9cm) and, roughly, takes up the same amount of space as ten bin bags.

Of course, larger sizes offer better value for money if you have enough waste to fill it, but our 4 and 8-yard skips are popular as they can accommodate a range of different projects and types of waste.

Pile Of GSH Skips in Yard

Why is it so important to choose the right size?

The importance of choosing the right-sized skip should never be underestimated.

If you choose one that’s too big, you’ll end up using more of your budget than you need to and it will take up unnecessary space on your property.

Whilst it would be better to have more space than not enough, choosing a skip that’s too small will leave you with unwanted rubbish all over the place, as well as the need to hire a second skip to accommodate the overflow.

An overfilled skip also comes with penalty fees, and, not to mention, poses a huge risk to passers-by. So to avoid these issues, consider your needs carefully to select the right size the first time around.

So, how do I choose the right skip size?

When choosing the perfect-sized skip, there are several things you need to consider, including:

      Project scale

The scope of your project will, of course, determine how much waste you’ll generate and what size skip you need.

For example, if you’re working on a full-scale home renovation, you’ll be better off with one of our larger skip sizes – like a 12 or 16-yard skip – to ensure you have enough room for all your rubbish.

For single-room renovations or cupboard clearouts that don’t generate too much waste or bulky construction materials, a smaller skip size – like the 4 or 8-yard skip – is more than ideal.

      Waste type

The volume of waste you’re expecting to dispose of is a vital consideration, but equally important is the type of waste you’ll be throwing away.

Bulky construction materials, for instance, will require more space, whereas lighter debris might not fill a larger skip, and will therefore be suited to something smaller.

      Access and placement

Waste type and volume aside, ensuring that you have enough space on your property, or on the road outside, to accommodate the skip size you need is crucial.

You should also make sure your skip is accessible, and that it can be dropped off and picked up easily by your skip hire company.

      Budget

Last, but certainly not least, is your budget.

It goes without saying that bigger sizes cost more, so make sure to balance your budget with the optimal skip size for your project requirements.

What Happens To The Waste Inside My Skip?

      GSH Waste Recycling LTD

Skip hire is one of the best ways to dispose of all your waste, but what happens to the rubbish inside your container once it’s been collected? Discover everything you need to know in this post!

No matter if you’re clearing out your cupboards, renovating your old kitchen, or getting your garden summer-ready, hiring a skip is one of the most effective ways to get rid of your rubbish.

But have you ever wondered what happens to the waste you put inside your skip once it’s been collected?

Many people believe it goes straight to the local landfill, but this couldn’t be further from the truth, and skip hire companies these days have a legal responsibility to recycle the majority of the waste they collect in their containers.

So, what actually happens to your rubbish, then?

Our experts here at GSH Waste Recycling reveal all in this article!

So, what happens to the waste inside my skip?

Once you’ve filled your skip and our team has taken it off your hands, the rubbish will be transported to our state-of-the-art waste transfer station, where it will go through a number of different processes, including:

      • Sorting

Skips carry a selection of different materials.

So, when your container has arrived at our facility and we’ve determined exactly how much waste we’re dealing with, we’ll empty the contents of your skip and begin sorting everything into recyclable categories.

Larger, bulkier items will be removed at this stage too.

      • Treatment and processing

Once all your waste has been organised into categories, we’ll begin the treatment process.

This process differs depending on the material we’re working with – for instance, scrap metal will be stripped down into different subcategories, while building rubble will be crushed, and soil will be screened.

No matter the contents,   the end goal is to prepare your rubbish to be either recycled in-house or sent to a specialist company to be repurposed.

      • Disposal

All processed waste can be recycled at this stage.

As we’ve mentioned, certain items – like fabrics, scrap metal, topsoil, and aggregates – can be transported to specialist companies, where they can be reused and reprocessed.

At GSH, we’re committed to protecting our planet and preserving it for future generations, which is why we aim to recycle at least 95% of the waste collected in our containers.

Whether this means doing it ourselves in-house or sending certain items – like fabrics, topsoil, scrap metal and aggregates – to specialist companies to be reused, you can rest assured that your waste is being disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

Large Scale Waste Removal - GSH Skip Hire
Large Scale Waste Removal – GSH Skip Hire

Why is it so important to recycle skip hire waste?

With a heavy focus on recycling and other eco-friendly practices, it’s important, now more than ever, to take responsibility for the ethical disposal of your waste.

When materials are left to decompose in a landfill site, they contribute massively to ground pollution and release tons of harmful emissions.

By ethically disposing of our waste, we can safeguard not just our local environment, but our shared global environment too.

With so many different skip sizes available, it can be difficult to know which will best meet your requirements – especially if you’re new to skip hire.

Two of our most popular containers here at GSH are 4-yard skips and 8-yard skips (among others), but what exactly are the differences, and which one is right for you?

      4-yard skips

Our 4-yard skips are our smallest, so if you’re taking on a small DIY project, this size will be more than ideal.

Holding up to 45 bin bags full of waste, one of our 4-yard skips will be perfect if you’re taking on a simple cupboard clear out, bedroom makeover, or garage clean-up, comfortably accommodating all of your associated rubbish.

Being the smallest of our collection of containers, 4-tonne containers are incredibly affordable – so if you’re looking for a cost-effective, budget-friendly waste management solution, you can’t go wrong with one of our 4-yard skips.

      8-yard skips

Our 8-yard skips are our most popular, and our customers use them for an array of different projects.

They’re especially useful if you aren’t really sure which size skip to hire, as they provide plenty room for all of your waste – accommodating approximately 80 (!) bin bags full of rubbish.

Even if you don’t expect your project to generate so much waste, but are unsure whether a 4-yard skip will be sufficient enough, an 8-yard skip is ideal. Remember, it’s always better to have too much room than not enough!

So, no matter whether you’re starting your dream bathroom renovation, kitchen makeover, or remodelling your living room, an 8-yard skip will be ideal.

Of course, being a little larger, 8-yard skips are more expensive to hire, but they’re more than worth it.

What other skip sizes can I choose from?

If you’re after something a bit bigger still, we offer a few more skip sizes to choose from, including:

      • 12 cubic yard maxi skip – if you’re expecting your project to generate lots of bulky items, these larger containers will be perfect, as they’re big enough to hold up to 120 bin bags full of waste.
      • 16 cubic yard maxi skip – this is our largest skip size, holding up to twice as much as our 8-yard skips; perfect for large-scale clear-ups and full home renovations.

Need help choosing the perfect skip size?

Not sure which skip size is right for your project?

      Hiring A Skip In 2023

Skip Hire This year- GSH Skips

Got a big renovation project in the books? Here’s how hiring a skip can help.

With the likes of dry January and Veganuary over and done with, now is the perfect time to start focusing on some of the bigger goals you set for yourself this year.

For lots of us, this will look like getting in shape for the summer or finally showing our savings account some love – but for others, it’ll look more like getting our homes in order.

No matter the plans you’ve got for your home – be it a garden makeover, bathroom renovation or a simple cupboard clear-out – you’ll need a way to get rid of the rubbish.

Skip hire is one of the best waste disposal methods by a mile – but why exactly should you hire a skip in 2023, and what sets it apart from other waste disposal methods?

Our experts here at GSH Waste Recycling tell all in this article.

Skip hire saves you time, money and effort

As opposed to other rubbish disposal methods, skip hire is by far the most convenient.

When working on any project – no matter how big or small – the last thing you need is to be waiting in hour-long queues for the tip.

You’ve got more important things to do.

Instead of wasting time carting your waste to your local waste centre, you could be disposing of your waste in a container left right on your doorstep.

Not only will this save you money on petrol, but it’ll also allow you to focus solely on your project.

      It’s completely customisable

Skip hire isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ kind of deal, and we understand that everyone has different requirements, which is why here at GSH, we offer multiple different skip sizes to cater to all your project requirements, including:

      • 4-cubic yard midi skips – these sizes are great for small DIY projects, including bathroom and kitchen refits and garden clear-ups. They can hold up to 45 bin bags of rubbish.
      • 8-cubic yard maxi skips – these skips are the go-to choice for small to medium-sized jobs, and they can accommodate approximately 80 bin bags full of waste!
      • 12-cubic yard maxi skips – if you expect your project to generate bulky items and construction materials, these larger containers will be more than ideal.
      • 14-cubic yard maxi skips – these skips are a popular choice for those taking on larger, full-scale home clear-ups, renovations and refits, and they can fit twice as much waste as the 8-yard skips can.

With so many different skip sizes available, you’ll be able to choose when you get it delivered and how long you keep it for, rather than being restricted by the tip’s operating hours.

Skip hire is better for the environment

If adopting eco-friendly habits is also high on your 2023 agenda, then we’ve got great news for you.

Hiring a skip is also much better for the environment than other waste disposal options.

Protecting our planet and preserving it for future generations has become a massive focus for many of us over the past couple of years, and when you work with GSH, you can be confident that your waste is being responsibly disposed of.

We’re proud to operate in full compliance with all current EU legislations, and we always aim to recycle at least 95% of the rubbish we collect in our containers.

      How Does Skip Hire Work?

Multi-purpose Skips - GSH Skip Hire

New to the world of skip hire? Here’s how the process works.

So, you’re finally getting round to your annual cupboard clear-out – but this year, you’ve decided to hire a skip to help you get rid of everything you no longer need.

If it’s your first time hiring a skip, you’re likely wondering how everything works. Admittedly, it can be a little confusing at first.

To help you prepare, the experts at GSH Waste walk you through the ins and outs of the skip hire process in this post.

Make sure you choose the right skip size

You might be confused as to why this matters, because you just toss everything in – right?

      Absolutely not!

If you haven’t hired a skip before, we understand how easy it can be to underestimate the importance of the size of your container.

Trust us when we say it’s one of the most important considerations, and you need to get it right the first time to avoid paying more than is necessary.

But how do you know which size you need?

Here at GSH Waste, we offer a range of domestic skip sizes, including:

      • 4-cubic yard midi skips – great for smaller DIY projects like bathroom or kitchen renovations, they can hold up to 45 bin bags full of rubbish.
      • 8-cubic yard maxi skips – the go-to choice for small to medium-sized jobs, one of these skips can hold approximately 80 bin bags full of waste.
      • 12-cubic yard maxi skips – for projects expected to generate lots of bulky items, these larger containers are perfect, and they can hold more than 120 bin bags.
      • 16-cubic yard maxi skips – ideal for light and bulky construction materials, these containers are popular for larger-scale clear-ups, renovations and refits, and can fit almost twice as much waste as the 8-yard skip!

Figure out how long you’ll need it for

You might only need a skip over the weekend, or you may need to keep it for a little longer.

Whilst we don’t need to know an exact timeframe right away, we always appreciate a rough estimate when booking your delivery appointment.

Typically, you can hire one of our domestic containers for up to two weeks, but if you need to extend this it’s not an issue – all we ask is that you give us plenty of notice.

At GSH, we pride ourselves on our flexible services and will do everything we can to accommodate your requirements.

      Look into skip hire permits

Permits are sometimes required for skip hire in Merseyside because of the safety hazards and inconvenience they can cause to the general public.

Not all skips need a permit, and if you’re planning on leaving yours in your garden or driveway then you don’t need to worry about this.

However, if you don’t have the luxury of a large garden or driveway, you’ll need to leave your container on the path or road outside your property – after getting permission from your local council.

To make things easier, we can arrange this for you, and the price will be included in the overall cost of your skip hire.

For more information about skip hire permits, check out our post here!

How To Make The Most Out Of Skip Hire This Summer

Skip Hire This year- GSH Skips

Hiring a skip this summer? Here’s how to make the most of your hire period.

The longer, warmer days are quickly approaching, and your annual summer shenanigans are right around the corner.

For many, the sunshine brings inspiration and motivation – whether it be to give their gardens a well overdue tidy-up or to finally get round to the bathroom refit they’ve been putting off.

No matter the project you’ll be working on, hiring a skip with GSH is sure to help you out this summer, but how can you make the most of it?

Here are some of our top tips!

Make sure you order the right skip size

Hiring the right size container is the most important thing to consider when it comes to booking your skip.

You must choose a size that’s suitable for your needs, which means you’ll need to have a rough idea of how much waste your project will generate.

At Grundy’s Skip Hire, we have a large stock of skips available for you to choose from, including:

      • 4-cubic yard midi skips

These skips are ideal for smaller, DIY home projects like living room and bedroom makeovers, or even just a simple cupboard clear out. They can hold up to 45 bin bags full of rubbish.

      • 8-cubic yard maxi skips

If you’re tackling a slightly larger job, like a full bathroom or kitchen refit, this size will be perfect, and they can fit approximately 80 bin bags of waste.

      • 12 and 16-cubic yard maxi skips

For projects that you expect to generate more bulky materials, a 12 or 16-yard maxi skip is your best bet, and they can hold up to 120 bin bags full of rubbish.

      Load your waste effectively

When hiring a skip, many people pay no mind to the way they load their container and tend to just throw things in as they go.

While this might work for some, others may find they’re left with little or no room in their skip quite quickly – but there are ways you can keep this from happening.

Begin with any cardboard or paper, making sure to flatten it before tossing it in.

Don’t just stack them on top of one another, though – create a layer and only begin stacking other items on top once the first layer is complete.

If you have any old bathroom tiles or bricks, put these in next, followed by bulkier items like furniture and appliances, making sure to break these down into smaller pieces.

Finally, you can begin disposing of any debris, like soil or sand, and any other loose items on top.

Consider where you’ll be leaving your skip

If it’s your first time hiring a skip, you might be wondering why this matters – driveway, garden, pavement – it’s all the same, right?

We’re here to tell you it isn’t, and you must have a good idea of where you’re going to leave your container so that you can organise a skip hire permit if necessary.

If you don’t have space in your driveway or garden, you’ll need to leave our skip on the path or road outside your house, and you’ll need to obtain a skip hire permit.

The point of a permit is to ensure the container is placed safely on public highways, and all licences will be approved or rejected by your local council.

Here at GSH, we can organise permits and acquire all the necessary documents for you for a small additional cost.

Know what can and can’t go into your skip

So long as it’s not hazardous, you’ll be able to dispose of any kind of waste you generate in your skip.

At GSH, our team will accept the following:

      • Construction waste, including bricks, rubble and wood
      • Broken or unwanted furniture
      • Recyclable plastics
      • Cardboard packages
      • Garden waste, including tree branches, soil and shrubs
      • Metal items

If you have any questions about the waste you can dispose of in our skips, be sure to get in touch with us – we’re more than happy to help!
